Richmond is marking what would have been the 83rd birthday of tennis legend and civil rights activist Arthur Ashe on July 10, 2026. David Harris, Ashe’s nephew, is leading commemorative efforts in the city to ensure his uncle’s impact continues to influence local community development.
Central to these efforts is the “Tennis Under The Lights” series, currently held at Byrd Park. According to WTVR, the program is designed to be inclusive, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels to promote the sport while fostering community cohesion. The initiative serves as both a tribute to Ashe and a practical vehicle for local investment.
Proceeds from the events are directed toward the Richmond Tennis Association and the Metro Richmond Tennis Club. These organizations utilize the funds to sustain youth programs that emphasize leadership development and civic engagement. Three additional events are scheduled at 600 S. Arthur Ashe Blvd. for July 23, August 6, and August 20, running from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Interested participants can find registration details at tennisunderthelightsrva.com.
