Progressive Alignment in Massachusetts
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders announced his endorsement of incumbent Senator Ed Markey on Monday, June 29, 2026. This move strengthens Markey’s position as he seeks to fend off a primary challenge from Representative Seth Moulton in the Massachusetts Democratic Senate race.
Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democratic party, described Markey as “one of the strongest progressive voices in the United States Senate.” The endorsement highlights a shared policy agenda, with Sanders citing their collaborative efforts on “Medicare for All,” living wage initiatives, and broader reforms to economic and political systems.
The Stakes of the Primary
Representative Seth Moulton, 47, launched his campaign against Markey last October. His platform centers heavily on the incumbent’s age—Markey turns 80 in July—and his five-decade tenure in Washington, D.C. Markey, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 2013 following a long career in the House, is facing a competitive fundraising environment, with his campaign acknowledging in recent emails that Moulton is gaining momentum in the polls.
Despite the challenge, Markey maintains significant institutional support, having secured endorsements from Senate colleagues, Beacon Hill lawmakers, and the majority of labor unions across Massachusetts. The primary election is set for September 1, with the winner expected to face Republican candidate John Deaton in the November general election.
Upcoming Debates
The endorsement arrives as both candidates prepare for a series of summer debates. The first is scheduled for July 8 at 22News in western Massachusetts. A subsequent debate is planned for August 3, hosted by a consortium of media outlets including Boston 25 News and GBH News. The final debate, hosted by WBUR, WCVB, and the Boston Globe, will take place on August 20.
