A Personal Insight into Parliamentary Life
Federal Labor MP Josh Burns, representing the electorate of Macnamara, has provided a rare glimpse into the intersection of his personal life, mental health, and the intense pressures of public office. In a recent appearance on ABC’s Kitchen Cabinet, Burns discussed his navigation of a turbulent political landscape, his partnership with Victorian state MP Georgie Purcell, and a previously undisclosed ADHD diagnosis.
As a Jewish lawmaker, Burns has faced an exceptionally difficult period, particularly following the October 7 conflict. His electorate, which includes the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield, has been a focal point for rising tensions. Burns recounted the visceral experience of witnessing the aftermath of the 2024 arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea, describing the “crisp, burnt smell” and the feeling of witnessing history repeat itself in Australia. This followed an earlier incident where his own electorate office was vandalized with slogans labeling Zionism as fascism.
The personal toll is compounded by the shadow of broader violence. Burns reflected on the Bondi Beach terror attack, during which he faced the immediate panic of a parent, fearing for his mother and daughter who were attending a nearby Hanukkah event. He described this period as the most difficult of his public life, noting that the conflict between his Jewish identity and his role within the Labor government is something he experiences internally.
Navigating Differences in the Public Eye
Burns’ relationship with Georgie Purcell, an Animal Justice Party MP, has often drawn media attention due to their differing political affiliations and advocacy areas. However, the couple emphasizes that they share core values despite the perception of rivalry. Burns noted that while they engage in “robust political discussion,” he would never ask Purcell to diminish her advocacy, just as he remains committed to his own community representation.
The couple, who recently welcomed a baby girl, divides their time between Purcell’s farm in Kyneton—home to 26 rescue animals—and their Melbourne home. Their partnership serves as a practical example of navigating ideological differences in a high-pressure environment, with both figures frequently targeted by external political abuse.
ADHD and the Mechanics of Focus
In a significant disclosure, Burns revealed he has been diagnosed with ADHD. He described the diagnosis as a source of “great strength” that helps him understand his cognitive process under pressure. Burns compared the clarity provided by his treatment to wearing glasses, noting that it allows him to move through tasks more effectively without feeling overwhelmed. This understanding of his own “wiring” has fundamentally changed how he manages his daily parliamentary duties, allowing him to focus more intentionally on his priorities.
