Quick Read

  • BFMTV omitted a guest’s far-left political ties during an interview.
  • The guest, Hugues B., was convicted for involvement in post-match violence.
  • The channel presented him only as a student, despite his public activist history.
  • This follows a similar incident at RMC involving activist Ilan Gabet.

French news channel BFMTV is facing criticism following an interview with Hugues B., a man recently convicted for his involvement in violent unrest following a Paris Saint-Germain victory. During the broadcast, the channel introduced the guest solely as a mathematics student and a PSG supporter, omitting his well-documented ties to far-left anti-fascist networks.

According to reports from Entrevue, Hugues B. received a four-month suspended prison sentence for participating in a group with the intent to commit violence. During the interview, he admitted to using a mortar during the disturbances, though he characterized his actions as non-malicious. He also utilized the platform to level accusations of systematic violence and racism against law enforcement officers.

Journalist Apolline de Malherbe noted that the guest’s rhetoric extended beyond his personal case into broader political arguments. However, the broadcast failed to disclose that Hugues B. has public links to far-left figures, including La France Insoumise MP Raphaël Arnault, and is a contributor to radical activist media. This incident marks the second time in a week that a major French outlet has been accused of such omissions; RMC previously presented activist Ilan Gabet as an unaffiliated student during a segment.

Critics argue that failing to disclose a guest’s political background prevents viewers from contextualizing the nature of the accusations being made, raising concerns regarding journalistic transparency and editorial standards in French media.
