The highly anticipated anime series Black Torch officially premiered on Crunchyroll today, July 5, 2026. Produced by 100studio and directed by Kei Umabiki, the series merges traditional Japanese spirit folklore with speculative science-fiction concepts, positioning itself as an “SF-akugeki” or science-fiction action drama.

The story follows Jiro Azuma, a teenager from a shinobi lineage who gains the ability to communicate with animals. His life changes when he saves a black cat named Rago, who is revealed to be a “mononoke”—a member of an ancient, autonomous civilization of energy beings. When Jiro is mortally wounded, Rago initiates a merger to save him. According to TechTimes, this narrative device serves as a compressed, intentional representation of endosymbiosis, the biological process where one organism lives within another, similar to how mitochondria became part of eukaryotic cells.

The show integrates several academic concepts into its world-building. Beyond endosymbiosis, it explores developmental bioelectricity to explain the nature of mononoke and references the field of zoosemiotics to ground Jiro’s ability to communicate across species. The series also ties its “Bureau of Espionage” to the historical Edo-period Oniwabanshu, a real intelligence network established by the Tokugawa shogunate.

Black Torch will run for 12 episodes, with new installments arriving weekly on Saturdays. The English dub, produced by Studiopolis, features performances by A.J. Beckles and Keith Silverstein. Additionally, Viz Media’s original manga series will be available on Crunchyroll Manga starting July 13.
