Quick Read

  • FSAI recalled 5 ham products from Brady Family, Tesco, and Lidl.
  • Contamination with Listeria monocytogenes prompted the action.
  • Affected products have a use-by date of July 16, 2026.
  • Consumers should check batch codes and discard affected items.

Recall Overview

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued an urgent recall for multiple cooked ham products sold under the Brady Family, Tesco Finest, and Lidl Deluxe brands. The action was initiated on June 30, 2026, following the detection of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that poses significant health risks to consumers.

The recall affects specific batch codes with a universal use-by date of July 16, 2026. O’Brien Fine Foods, the manufacturer, stated that the recall is precautionary, noting that while the bacteria was detected in a single batch, the identified products were processed in the same area on the same production day.

Affected Products

Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators for the following items and avoid consumption:

  • Brady Family Wood Smoked Real Irish Ham (80g): Batch 235417
  • Brady Family Hand Crumbed Real Irish Ham (80g): Batches 235880 and 235765
  • Lidl Deluxe Triple Oak Smoked Carved Irish Ham (130g): Batch 235461
  • Lidl Deluxe Honey Roast Carved Irish Ham (130g): Batch 235473
  • Tesco Finest Crumbed Shaved Ham (120g): Batch 235412

Health Risks and Analysis

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms can include high temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea. While many infections are mild, the incubation period can last up to 70 days, making early detection and removal of the product from the food chain critical.

The frequency of such recalls in the Irish and broader European market has sparked public debate regarding food safety standards. Industry analysts point to two primary factors: increasingly stringent regulatory oversight by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and more aggressive, targeted testing campaigns by national agencies like the FSAI. Rather than indicating a decline in manufacturing hygiene, these recalls reflect a proactive, data-driven approach to food safety. The use of the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) ensures that potential contamination is identified and addressed before it results in a public health crisis.
