Strategic Squad Reinforcement
Leigh Leopards have officially confirmed the signing of Samoan international prop Lazarus Vaalepu from the Melbourne Storm, effective immediately. The 27-year-old forward arrives at the Super League club to bolster the pack for the final 11 matches of the 2026 Betfred Super League season as the team pushes for a play-off position.
Vaalepu’s arrival comes as Leigh prepares for upcoming roster changes, with current forwards Robbie Mulhern and Owen Trout set to depart at the end of the campaign. Mulhern is expected to join the Castleford Tigers, while Trout has secured a deal with the Cronulla Sharks.
Proven NRL Pedigree
Vaalepu brings significant top-tier experience to the Leopards, having made 12 first-grade appearances for the Melbourne Storm. His rise in the NRL was rapid; after joining the club following a successful trial, he became the least experienced player since 1994 to feature in an NRL Grand Final when he was named on the interchange bench for the 2024 decider against the Penrith Panthers.
Director of Rugby Andrew Henderson highlighted the physical impact Vaalepu is expected to make. “He’s a player with genuine presence, power, and punch, giving us a real point of difference within our middle unit,” Henderson stated. “He’s humble, driven to succeed, and genuinely believes he can grow his game under Adrian Lam in Super League.”
Familiarity with English Conditions
The transition to the UK is not expected to be a hurdle for the Samoan international. Vaalepu previously gained experience on English soil during the 2024 international series, where he represented Samoa against England. This previous exposure to the climate and playing style is viewed as a distinct advantage by the coaching staff.
Vaalepu will officially join the squad pending the completion of necessary visa requirements and relocation arrangements. The club expressed gratitude toward owner Derek Beaumont for providing the financial backing to secure the player during the critical final stretch of the season.
