Boston Scientific (BSX) shares experienced a significant decline on Wednesday, falling by as much as 5.9% following the disclosure of a serious cybersecurity incident. By early afternoon, the stock remained down approximately 3.5% as investors reacted to the potential operational and financial implications of the breach.
In a regulatory filing submitted late Tuesday, the medical device manufacturer confirmed that it had identified a security compromise affecting its internal information technology systems. The company stated that the breach has caused a “global disruption” to its standard business operations, specifically hindering its ability to process and ship customer orders.
Boston Scientific has activated its formal incident response protocols to contain the threat and mitigate further damage. However, the company cautioned that the investigation is still in its early stages. Consequently, leadership has not yet determined the full extent of the operational downtime or the long-term financial costs associated with the disruption.
The incident highlights growing risks within the healthcare technology sector.
