  • Unlike Xbox, there is no backward compatibility for legacy owners.

New PlayStation Ports Spark Debate

Activision has officially launched digital ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. While the re-release of these fan-favorite titles was highly anticipated, the launch has been met with mixed reactions due to a lack of backward compatibility, aggressive pricing, and the confirmed removal of legacy content.

Feature Omissions and Community Impact

Reports from IGN and CharlieIntel confirm that several iconic features from the original releases have been omitted in these new ports. Specifically, “Theater Mode,” which allowed players to record and review matches, and “Wager Matches,” a popular competitive playlist featuring game modes like “Gun Game,” are absent. Additionally, Black Ops 2 appears to lack its original competitive League Mode. These removals have frustrated long-time fans who view these features as essential to the identity of the titles.

Pricing and Platform Comparisons

Unlike the Xbox ecosystem, where original discs remain backward compatible, PlayStation users must purchase these titles as standalone digital products at $40 each. Furthermore, the expansion packs and season passes are sold separately for $29.99 each. While PlayStation Plus subscribers are currently eligible for significant discounts until August 6, the total cost for the complete experience remains a point of contention for many players, especially when compared to the existing Xbox model.

Despite these criticisms, the base games retain their original campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes. The emblem editor also remains accessible, ensuring that some of the most recognizable elements of the early 2010s shooters are preserved for a new generation of console users.
