Chevrolet Delays Next-Generation Camaro Sedan to 2029

Chevrolet Camaro

Quick Read

  • The seventh-generation Chevrolet Camaro is now expected to debut as a 2029 model.
  • The vehicle will feature a four-door sedan body style based on GM's Alpha 2 architecture.
  • Plans include V8 engine power and a manual transmission option.
  • The model is positioned to compete with upcoming four-door variants of the Ford Mustang.

A New Chapter for the Camaro Nameplate

General Motors is recalibrating the timeline for its highly anticipated Camaro revival. According to reports from GM Authority, the seventh-generation Chevrolet Camaro—now envisioned as a four-door sports sedan—has been delayed by approximately 12 months. Originally expected to enter production in late 2027 for a 2028 model year launch, the vehicle is now slated to debut as a 2029 model.

This shift represents a significant strategic pivot for Chevrolet. Since the conclusion of sixth-generation Camaro production in 2024, the brand has maintained that the nameplate’s story was far from over. The upcoming model is expected to utilize an updated version of General Motors’ Alpha 2 rear-wheel drive architecture, a platform designed to accommodate longitudinally mounted engines.

Engineering the Performance Sedan

The technical specifications currently circulating suggest that Chevrolet intends to retain the classic muscle car formula in a modern, four-door package. The vehicle is expected to feature V8 power, with speculation pointing toward the new 6.7-litre naturally aspirated LS6 V8 engine recently unveiled for the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette. That engine currently produces 535hp (399kW) and 520lb-ft (705Nm) of torque.

Unlike many contemporary high-performance vehicles that have moved exclusively to automatic or dual-clutch transmissions, the next-gen Camaro is expected to offer a manual gearbox option. This aligns the project with the spirit of the Holden Commodore SS, the Australian-built sports sedan that served as the basis for the Chevrolet SS exported to the U.S. from 2013 to 2017.

Market Context and Competition

The decision to move toward a four-door configuration places the Camaro in direct competition with rumored four-door variants of the Ford Mustang. Reports from Automotive News suggest Ford has already showcased plans for a four-door, petrol-powered Mustang to its U.S. dealers, with a potential launch before the end of the decade.

While neither Chevrolet nor Ford has officially confirmed these sedan programs for global markets, the potential return of the “V8 sports sedan” category signals a renewed interest in traditional performance configurations among domestic manufacturers. It remains unclear whether either vehicle will be engineered for right-hand drive markets, though the global success of the S550-series Mustang provides a potential roadmap for international distribution.
