A Rare Mid-Camp Departure
The Cincinnati Bengals announced a significant roster adjustment on Saturday, as rookie cornerback Ceyair Wright departed the team to pursue a professional acting opportunity. According to reporting by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Wright was offered a lead role in a major film production, with filming scheduled to continue through late October.
Rather than releasing the undrafted free agent, the Bengals have placed Wright on the exempt/left squad list. This procedural move removes him from the team’s 90-man active roster without severing his contract, effectively keeping the door open for a potential return to the NFL once his filming obligations conclude. The team was aware of Wright’s dual career path when they signed him in May, even highlighting his background in a rookie minicamp feature titled “The Real Hollywood Bengal.”
A Background in Entertainment
For the 23-year-old, this transition is a return to a lifelong passion. Wright, who played college football at USC and Nebraska, has been involved in the entertainment industry since age five. His portfolio includes modeling, commercial work, and notable acting credits such as playing Darius James in the 2021 feature film “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” His resume also features appearances in television series such as “Grown-ish,” “2 Broke Girls,” and “Training Day.”
Despite his Hollywood success, Wright’s recent football performance suggested he was serious about his professional development on the field. During his 2025 campaign at Nebraska, he recorded 29 tackles and a team-high five pass breakups across 13 games, proving his capability as a defensive contributor.
Filling the Roster Spot with Matthew McDoom
The Bengals moved quickly to maintain defensive depth by signing cornerback Matthew McDoom. A rookie out of the University of Cincinnati, McDoom originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in May before being waived on August 8.
McDoom brings a solid collegiate track record to Cincinnati, having spent his first three seasons at Coastal Carolina before transferring to the Bearcats for his final year. Across his four-year college career, he logged four interceptions and 26 pass deflections. At 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, he provides the Bengals with an immediate reinforcement in the secondary as the team continues its training camp preparations.
Stakes for the Season
Wright’s return timeline—late October—presents a complex scenario for both the player and the organization. By the time filming concludes, the Bengals’ roster dynamics may be significantly altered by injuries or performance evaluations. While the exempt status provides flexibility, Wright will face the challenge of reintegrating into an NFL defensive scheme mid-season, a task that requires both physical conditioning and a rapid grasp of evolving team tactics.
