Quick Read

  • Preliminary hearings for suspect Tyler Robinson are underway in Utah.
  • Candace Owens faces backlash for promoting conspiracy theories about the murder.
  • Conservative figures like Ricky Schroder and Dana Loesch are publicly denouncing the exploitation of the tragedy.

Public Backlash Grows

As the legal proceedings against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk, continue in Provo, Utah, a secondary conflict has emerged within the conservative media landscape. Prominent figures, including actor Ricky Schroder and radio host Dana Loesch, have publicly condemned podcaster Candace Owens for her persistent promotion of conspiracy theories surrounding the September 2025 assassination.

During the fifth day of preliminary hearings this week, Schroder and his wife, Julie Trammel, expressed their disgust after listening to an appearance by Owens on “The Shawn Ryan Show.” In that episode, Owens reiterated claims that Robinson was a “patsy” and suggested that the accused was never present at the Utah Valley University campus on the day of the shooting. Furthermore, Owens has alleged that individuals within Turning Point USA (TPUSA) were involved in a cover-up and has implied that the victim’s widow, Erika Kirk, played a role in orchestrating the murder.

Accusations of Profiteering

The backlash extends beyond Schroder’s personal condemnation. Radio host Dana Loesch recently used her program to blast both Owens and Megyn Kelly, accusing them of exploiting the tragedy for ratings, financial gain, and personal influence. Loesch argued that these figures have abandoned credibility in favor of sensationalism, challenging them to defend their claims publicly.

“There are things in life that are more important than clicks, money, and views on YouTube,” noted Christian journalist Billy Hallowell, who also criticized the harassment directed at Erika Kirk. Hallowell characterized the ongoing attacks on the widow as “demonic” and urged observers to focus on the judicial process rather than unsubstantiated theories.

Impact on Conservative Discourse

The controversy marks a deepening rift within conservative circles. While President Donald Trump has publicly urged Erika Kirk to pursue legal action against those spreading defamatory claims, the online harassment has persisted. Observers note that the dispute has shifted from the facts of the murder trial to a broader struggle for the future of conservative media credibility and the ethical responsibilities of independent content creators.
