According to findings presented at the Essex Coroner’s Court by Area Coroner Michelle Brown, Newton and his friend Aran Martinson died after embarking on a recreational trek in the mountainous Wadi Naqab region on July 18. Investigators established that the pair succumbed to severe organ failure triggered by extreme heat as temperatures soared to approximately 40°C, with canyon conditions exacerbating the heat.
Inquest Details and Fatal Timeline
The inquest revealed that Newton had contacted his wife during the early hours of July 18, at around 02:00 local time, to inform her of the planned excursion. Speaking with the BBC, Coroner Brown noted that Newton’s wife urged him not to proceed, citing the punishing desert temperatures and concerns regarding his lack of sleep after being out the previous night.
Despite the warning, Newton and Martinson set off at approximately 07:00 local time on a circular trail designed to take roughly four hours without specialized equipment. Text messages read during the court proceedings showed Martinson’s wife messaging him at 09:26 to warn, “You must be cooking,” before further messages went unanswered into the afternoon.
Rescue Operations and Medical Findings
When both men failed to return or make contact after several hours, their wives alerted local authorities, triggering a search and rescue operation in Ras Al Khaimah. Emergency teams located the two men between 3km and 4km from where they had parked their vehicle. Their bodies were discovered lying on their backs among large rocks, approximately 350 meters apart.
Both men were transported to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where they were pronounced dead. Coroner Brown concluded that their core body temperatures rose severely, resulting in terminal organ failure. Brown formally recorded a conclusion of misadventure, describing the tragedy as “an intentional trip with unintended consequences,” as reported by the Times of India.
Family Tributes and Institutional Impact
Following the tragedy, former Chelsea star Eddie Newton traveled to the United Arab Emirates to formally identify his son’s body. The Premier League club released a statement expressing deep devastation over the loss of Cassius Newton, who had previously spent time within the club’s academy setup.
Tributes also flowed for Martinson, a father of three originally from Bishop’s Stortford who had recently relocated to the UAE alongside Newton for work at a global company. Martinson’s wife paid public tribute online, remembering him as an exceptionally driven and hardworking individual.
