Cricket Australia (CA) has officially confirmed the implementation of “additional guardrails” regarding the professional conduct and selection duties of Australian women’s cricket vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner. The decision follows public scrutiny surrounding Gardner’s personal relationship with teammate Georgia Voll, which coincided with the breakdown of Gardner’s marriage to Monica Wright.
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg addressed the situation on Thursday, affirming that the organization was aware of the relationship prior to the media reports. Despite public criticism from Wright regarding the perceived power imbalance and potential impact on team integrity, CA has maintained its support for Gardner’s leadership role. Greenberg emphasized that Gardner’s vice-captaincy remains intact, citing her high standing within the team’s professional system.
The ‘Guardrails’ Mechanism
The core of the new policy change involves a formal recusal process. Under the updated protocols, Gardner is required to remove herself from any selection discussions involving Georgia Voll. This measure is intended to mitigate both real and perceived conflicts of interest, ensuring that the team’s selection panel—which includes the captain, coach, and other selectors—operates without the influence of personal dynamics between leadership and players.
Greenberg noted that the organization has also updated its ‘Respect at Work’ policy to better address personal relationships within teams, particularly those involving members in leadership positions. The goal is to provide a framework that allows Gardner to continue her duties as vice-captain while insulating the selection process from potential bias.
Public Response and Leadership Stakes
The controversy gained traction following public comments from Monica Wright, who questioned the lack of a public stance from Cricket Australia. Wright argued that the responsibility of representing the country entails a high moral standard, suggesting that a power imbalance exists when a leader is involved in a relationship with a team member.
In response, Gardner issued a statement via Instagram on Thursday. She addressed the separation from her ex-wife, expressed regret for the pain caused, and thanked the CA board for their continued support. She stated her intention to focus on her role as a leader and providing support for her teammates in the upcoming season. Gardner, 29, was appointed vice-captain alongside captain Sophie Molineux following the retirement of Alyssa Healy.
