Industry Response to Digital-Only Shift
Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has weighed in on the intensifying debate regarding the future of physical media in the gaming industry. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Houser addressed the industry’s trajectory following Sony’s recent announcement that it will discontinue the production of physical game discs for PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028.
While Houser noted that he does not hold a strong personal preference for physical media in the gaming sector, he maintained that institutional responsibility dictates that companies should cater to consumer demand. “I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it,” Houser stated. He added that the transition to digital has provided tangible benefits for the industry, specifically citing the ability to patch and update titles to resolve technical issues—a practice that has significantly influenced modern game quality.
The Dual Nature of Physical and Digital
Houser was joined by Lazlow Jones, a long-time collaborator and former Rockstar writer, who offered a nuanced perspective on the convenience of digital distribution versus the tactile satisfaction of physical ownership. Jones highlighted the practical advantages of digital libraries, particularly for mobile gaming on platforms like the Steam Deck during travel, while acknowledging the emotional appeal of owning a physical product.
The discussion underscored a growing divide in the gaming sector: the efficiency of live-service updates and digital-only ecosystems versus the preservation and ownership rights associated with physical discs. This debate has gained significant traction since the Sony policy shift, which has prompted widespread discussion on social media and industry forums regarding the longevity of digital-only game libraries.
Expanding Beyond Gaming
Beyond the gaming discourse, Houser and Jones provided updates on their current venture, Absurd Ventures. The company is actively developing two open-world video game projects—one described as a “comedy action adventure” and the other featuring a more serious tone. Additionally, the duo confirmed that their crime fiction comic series, American Caper, will conclude its current season with a double-sized issue #12, scheduled for release on November 11, 2026. The finale is set to wrap up the narrative arc centered in the town of Verona, Wyoming.
