Following the announcement by Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday that she will depart from her role as White House press secretary, speculation has intensified regarding her successor. Reports, including those from The Daily Beast and USA TODAY, indicate that CNN contributor and conservative commentator Scott Jennings is currently at the top of the list for the position.
If appointed, Jennings would represent a distinct shift in the administration’s communications profile. While Leavitt has been characterized by her intense loyalty to President Donald Trump and her frequent practice of parroting administration talking points, Jennings brings a different background as a veteran political operative. He previously served as deputy director of political affairs under President George W. Bush and acted as a long-time advisor to former U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell.
The Case for Jennings
Jennings has cemented his status as a staunch Trump ally, most notably through the publication of his 2025 book, “A Revolution of Common Sense: How Donald Trump Stormed Washington and Fought for Western Civilization.” His consistent presence on CNN as a conservative voice has provided him with a platform to defend the administration’s policies, often sparking heated debates with colleagues and anchors.
During a recent appearance on CNN’s NewsNight, when asked about the possibility of taking the role, Jennings avoided a direct answer, instead praising the outgoing Leavitt as “maybe the greatest White House press secretary in the last 30 years.”
Controversy and Fact-Checking
The potential nomination has drawn sharp criticism from media watchdogs and political opponents who point to Jennings’ frequent on-air clashes regarding factual accuracy. Critics have highlighted several instances where the commentator’s claims were immediately challenged by CNN anchors. Notably, in May 2025, Jennings denied the existence of physical fitness requirements for White House event guests, only to be corrected by anchor Kaitlan Collins, who read from an official memo detailing the specific standards.
Further controversy arose this week when Jennings shared a video supercut of progressive activist Hasan Piker. The edited footage attempted to link Piker—and by extension Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed—to inflammatory rhetoric. Piker has since suggested he may pursue litigation, labeling the compilation “clear-cut defamation.”
Other Contenders
While Jennings is considered a frontrunner, other names have surfaced in political circles and prediction markets such as Kalshi. These include Trump’s former personal attorney Alina Habba and current principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly. The White House has not yet confirmed a timeline for the transition, and the administration remains focused on the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
