  • The rollout is part of Elon Musk's long-term goal to transform X into an 'everything app'.

A Step Toward the ‘Everything App’

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has officially launched its new financial services suite, X Money, for users based in the United States. This rollout marks a significant milestone in Musk’s long-stated ambition to transform the platform into an “everything app” capable of handling a wide array of consumer needs, including banking and payments.

Following an invite-only beta phase conducted earlier this year, the service is now available to users with active X Premium or Premium+ subscriptions. The integration of banking tools directly into the social media interface is intended to allow users to manage their finances, send payments, and store funds without leaving the app.

Core Financial Features

X Money offers a range of traditional banking features integrated into the platform’s digital environment. Key components include:

  • Peer-to-Peer Payments: Users can send and receive money to other individuals on the X platform instantly.
  • X Visa Debit Card: Subscribers receive a silver-colored physical Visa debit card that supports integration with digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. The card carries no foreign transaction fees and offers free ATM withdrawals worldwide.
  • Deposit Accounts: Accounts are held through X Money’s partner, Cross River Bank, which is an FDIC-insured institution, providing coverage for deposits up to $250,000.
  • Direct Deposit and Bill Pay: The service supports paycheck direct deposits, which X claims can allow users to access their funds up to two days earlier than traditional methods. Users can also utilize the platform to pay bills and mail checks.

Interest Rates and Subscription Tiers

The financial incentives for X Money are tied to the platform’s subscription tiers. Premium+ subscribers—who pay $40 monthly or $395 annually—are immediately eligible for a 6% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on their deposits. Premium subscribers, priced at $8 per month or $84 per year, can access the same 6% interest rate, though they must meet specific qualifying direct deposit requirements to unlock the benefit.

In addition to interest, the X Visa card offers 3% cashback on eligible purchases, with rewards tracked directly within the “Money” section of the X application.

Institutional Context and History

The launch of X Money is a realization of goals Musk has discussed since his 2022 acquisition of Twitter. Musk, who co-founded X.com in 1999—a company that later merged with Confinity to become PayPal—has frequently signaled that financial services would be a cornerstone of his vision for the platform. In late 2023, Musk told employees that he envisioned a future where users would not require a traditional bank account, stating, “If it involves money, it’ll be on our platform.”

While the current launch is limited to the United States, X has indicated plans to expand the service to more users in the future. The company is positioning the service as a secure, “passkey-protected” financial hub, emphasizing 24/7 support as part of its entry into the competitive fintech landscape.
