Quick Read

  • EU lawmakers are demanding an ethics probe into FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
  • The controversy stems from the reversal of Folarin Balogun's red-card ban after a call from Donald Trump.
  • Over 35 lawmakers signed a letter calling the move a 'perversion of justice'.
  • England and other teams are now citing the precedent to challenge their own disciplinary sanctions.

Calls for Accountability

A group of European Parliament lawmakers has formally requested an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino, citing concerns over the organization’s political neutrality. The move follows the controversial suspension of a one-match ban for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, a decision that occurred after a reported personal intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Lawmakers Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang, spearheading the initiative with the support of 35 colleagues, condemned the decision as a “perversion of justice.” In a joint statement, they argued that FIFA’s mid-tournament rule change undermines the integrity of the 2026 World Cup.

The ‘Trump Effect’ and FIFA Integrity

The controversy centers on the last-32 match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Balogun received a red card. Following a phone call from President Trump to Infantino, FIFA’s disciplinary committee suspended the resulting one-match ban, allowing the striker to play in the team’s subsequent 4-1 loss to Belgium.

The reversal has triggered widespread backlash within the football community. Figures including Jurgen Klopp and Gary Lineker have joined calls for Infantino’s resignation, accusing the FIFA leadership of prioritizing political favors over established disciplinary protocols. Despite the intervention, the U.S. team was eliminated from the tournament, leading to further criticism of the political influence exerted over the sporting event.

Institutional Stakes

The EU lawmakers are now urging national football associations across member states to pressure the FIFA Ethics Committee to launch a full-scale probe. The investigation is expected to examine whether the Trump administration’s influence extended beyond the Balogun case, specifically referencing the recent award of the FIFA Peace Prize to the U.S. President as a potential breach of political neutrality.

FIFA has maintained that the suspension was a procedural decision made by its disciplinary committee. However, the precedent has already caused ripples, with other national teams, including England, reportedly exploring legal avenues to appeal their own players’ suspensions based on the Balogun ruling.
