An Indian national was killed and a New Zealand tourist was injured on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after two private helicopters collided in mid-air while preparing to land in Nepal’s high-altitude Mount Everest region, according to authorities. The fatal crash occurred at the Pheriche helipad in the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-4 of the Solukhumbu district, roughly 250 kilometers from Kathmandu, officials confirmed.

Kaman Singh Thapa Magar, the chief district officer of Solukhumbu district, told The Jerusalem Post that the New Zealand national had been successfully rescued following the collision. Nabin Raja Budhathoki, the officer in charge of Solukhumbu district police, told News24 Online that one tourist died on the spot, while another injured survivor was admitted to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Private Operators and Aircraft Involvement

The two aircraft involved in Tuesday’s incident were operated by private aviation firms Fishtail Air and Dynasty Air. According to statements from the companies and local reports, the Fishtail Air helicopter was carrying passengers who had been rescued from the Everest region when it crashed during its landing sequence. The Indian tourist who died and the injured New Zealander were on board this particular flight, which was commanded by Captain Prajjwal KC.

Meanwhile, a Dynasty Air official stated that its helicopter was carrying only cargo at the time of the collision. The Dynasty Air aircraft was piloted by Captain Rabindra Prajapati, who sustained injuries during the incident. Following the crash, Captain Prajapati was airlifted via a Prabhu Helicopter to Lukla for specialized medical attention, as reported by News24 Online. Al Jazeera also confirmed through authorities that a 47-year-old Indian national was among the casualties.

Peak Season Aviation Pressures in the Himalayas

The collision took place amid Nepal’s peak trekking season, a period defined by intense operational activity across Himalayan aviation hubs. Small helicopters are extensively utilized throughout the region to transport trekkers, mountaineers, and essential supplies, as well as to conduct vital emergency evacuations from high-altitude terrain where fixed-wing aircraft cannot operate.

The concentration of multiple aircraft operating in confined landing zones during peak periods has frequently drawn scrutiny from aviation safety advocates. While viral video footage circulating on social media purported to show the rotors of the two helicopters colliding on the icy ground below, local authorities noted that the exact sequence and mechanical factors leading to the impact remain under formal investigation by civil aviation regulators.

Wider Regional Safety Concerns

Tuesday’s tragedy in Solukhumbu adds to mounting concerns regarding high-altitude aviation safety across the region. The incident follows a separate recent helicopter crash in Uttarakhand, where an aircraft carrying a pilot and five passengers went down shortly after takeoff from Badrinath, resulting in the deaths of all six individuals on board.

As investigators examine the physical evidence and witness accounts from the Pheriche helipad, regulatory authorities are expected to review landing protocols for private charter operators in the Everest base camp corridor. The immediate priority for district officials remains completing the formal identification procedures, supporting the injured survivors, and determining the precise operational triggers that led to the mid-air convergence.
