  • The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75-4%.

Fed Policy Shift Impacts Precious Metals

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announced a unanimous decision on Wednesday to raise the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, moving the target range to 3.75% to 4%. The decision, supported by all 12 committee members, reflects the central bank’s ongoing focus on curbing inflation as economic activity continues at a solid pace, according to the Federal Reserve statement.

Following the announcement, spot gold prices retreated to $4,310.10 per ounce. The market’s reaction underscores the sensitivity of non-yielding assets to interest rate environments, as higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding precious metals.

Hawkish Outlook for 2026

Beyond the immediate rate hike, the latest Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) revealed a notably hawkish shift among policymakers. Sixteen of the 18 participating officials now expect at least one additional quarter-point hike in 2026, a significant increase from the six officials who held that view during the June meeting.

Jeffrey Roach, Chief Economist at LPL Financial, noted that the Fed’s stance was more aggressive than market participants had anticipated. “If the economy keeps up like it has, the Fed is telling us that we may not see a cut until 2028,” Roach stated, highlighting the committee’s commitment to its 2% inflation target despite geopolitical uncertainties.

Market Interpretations

While equity markets have shown resilience, the firmer U.S. Dollar and the decline in gold suggest that investors are adjusting to a “higher for longer” interest rate environment. Kyle Rodda, Senior Financial Market Analyst at Capital.com, pointed out that the upward revisions to GDP and inflation forecasts, paired with downward revisions to unemployment projections, have bolstered the case for sustained restrictive policy.

The committee’s focus remains on maintaining stability within the banking system while addressing the persistence of elevated inflation. As the Fed continues to monitor incoming economic data, market observers are shifting their focus to the shape of the yield curve to gauge the long-term impact of current monetary policy on inflation expectations.
