  • Public toilet capacity at Filey’s Royal Parade increases from 5 to 13 units.
  • The original facility was closed in February due to structural defects.
  • New units are scheduled to be fully operational by Friday, June 19.
  • The expansion aims to accommodate seasonal tourist demand.

North Yorkshire Council (NYC) has announced a significant expansion of public toilet facilities at Royal Parade in the coastal town of Filey. Starting June 19, eight additional units will be installed, bringing the total capacity to 13, including improved accessible facilities.

The move follows the emergency closure of the original toilet block in February due to severe structural defects, age, and damage from adverse weather conditions. Since March, temporary facilities have been in place to serve the public, but rising demand ahead of the peak summer holiday season necessitated a more robust response.

Cllr Carl Les, leader of North Yorkshire Council, stated that the council recognized local frustration regarding the lack of facilities. “It’s important that our communities have access to good public facilities,” he noted, adding that the council is continuing to explore long-term permanent solutions for the redevelopment of the site.

A spokesperson for Filey Town Council welcomed the development, noting that the increased capacity will help accommodate both residents and the influx of visitors expected over the coming months. While the current expansion provides immediate relief, the council confirmed that planning for permanent, long-term facilities at the Royal Parade site remains ongoing.
