The June 12, 2026, release of the Netflix documentary Maternal Instinct has brought renewed scrutiny to the 2020 murder of 21-year-old Reagan Simmons-Hancock in New Boston, Texas. The film, directed by Jessica Dimmock, examines the elaborate web of deceit constructed by Taylor Parker, who is currently on death row after being convicted of the murder and the kidnapping of Simmons-Hancock’s unborn child, Braxlynn.

The Anatomy of Deception

Parker’s path to the crime involved years of fabricated financial history and medical records. As detailed in court testimony and the documentary, Parker, who had previously undergone a hysterectomy, staged multiple pregnancies to maintain her relationship with her then-boyfriend, Wade Griffin. Griffin, who appears in the documentary to recount the emotional toll of the deception, testified in 2022 that he was manipulated into believing Parker had access to millions of dollars in family royalties and was pregnant with his child.

The documentary shifts the focus from the procedural facts of the trial to the human experience of the victims. Dimmock emphasizes the perspectives of Simmons-Hancock’s grieving family and the psychological impact on those who, like Griffin, were ensnared in Parker’s schemes. The film highlights how Parker’s manipulation effectively isolated her victims, making it difficult for those around her to distinguish reality from her carefully curated fabrications.

Legal and Institutional Stakes

The case has sparked broader discussions regarding the limitations of the legal and medical systems. Director Jessica Dimmock notes that the film is intended to highlight how existing laws failed to protect the Simmons-Hancock family, specifically regarding the inability of medical professionals to disclose private patient history—even when they suspected Parker’s pregnancy claims were fraudulent.

Taylor Parker remains incarcerated at the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas. Following the exhaustion of her appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to review her case in May 2026, she remains one of seven women on Texas’ death row. No execution date has been set.
