Mercedes driver George Russell expressed disappointment following the British Grand Prix Sprint, where he finished in fourth place after starting fifth on the grid. While the Briton successfully gained one position over the course of the 100km dash, he believes a podium finish was within reach.
Russell enjoyed a strong opening lap at Silverstone, briefly climbing to third after executing two overtakes. However, he soon found himself vulnerable on the straights, losing positions to Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. Although he successfully repassed Verstappen to reclaim fourth, he was unable to close the gap to Norris in the final stages, finishing less than a second behind the McLaren driver.
“P3 is probably where I should have finished,” Russell told Formula 1 media after the session. “I did two great overtakes in two corners, then I got a bit left vulnerable. I need to understand how I managed to pull the moves off but then how I lost positions again anyway.”
Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord offered a more optimistic assessment of the performance, highlighting Russell’s tire management and pace. “He went from P5 to P4. It looked like he had the pace to catch Lando as well—he was closing in on him pretty quick at the end, so that suggests that the degradation is good on both cars,” Lord noted. The team is now shifting its focus to the main qualifying session, aiming to secure a better starting position for Sunday’s full-length race.
