Quick Read

  • Golden Village will close its Plaza Singapura outlet on August 16, 2026.
  • The closure is part of a S0 million mall renovation project.
  • The cinema served as a major cultural hub for anime fans and community events.
  • Golden Village will continue to operate 16 other locations across Singapore.

Golden Village (GV), Singapore’s leading cinema operator, has announced the closure of its long-standing outlet at Plaza Singapura. The cinema, which has operated for 28 years, will cease operations in phases, with final screenings scheduled for August 2, 2026, and a total closure set for August 16, 2026.

A Strategic Mall Transformation

The closure is a direct consequence of a S$160 million Asset Enhancement Initiative (AEI) launched by the mall’s management, CapitaLand. The project, slated to span from the third quarter of 2026 through the end of 2028, is designed to refresh the retail and lifestyle mix of the property, which sits prominently along the Orchard Road shopping belt.

“We are deeply grateful to generations of moviegoers who have supported GV Plaza over the past 28 years,” said Clara Cheo, chief executive of Golden Village. “The cinema has been home to countless shared experiences.”

Shifting Landscape for Physical Cinemas

The departure of GV Plaza Singapura highlights a broader trend in Singapore’s retail environment, where legacy entertainment anchors are being displaced to accommodate modern, higher-yield lifestyle concepts. This follows the recent closure of the GV Tiong Bahru outlet, which shuttered earlier this year after its 32-year lease concluded.

For many residents, the Plaza Singapura location was more than a standard cinema; it functioned as a vital community hub, particularly for niche audiences. The venue gained a reputation as a primary destination for anime enthusiasts, hosting high-profile community events and screenings, such as those for the Demon Slayer franchise.

The Future of Cinema Accessibility

While the closure marks a significant loss for the Orchard Road district, Golden Village maintains a robust footprint with 16 remaining cinemas across Singapore. The company continues to experiment with content distribution, recently collaborating with Clover Films to add 70 screenings of the Teochew-language film Dear You following immense public demand. This move underscores the industry’s focus on targeted, culturally relevant content to maintain relevance in an increasingly digital-first entertainment market.
