HBO’s comic-book mystery series Lanterns is set to broadcast its second episode, titled “Trust Fall,” on Sunday, August 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following a strong debut for the platform. According to viewing data released by HBO, the series premiere gathered over nine million global viewers across HBO Max and linear broadcasts within its first three days. North American audiences accounted for approximately 70 percent of that total, placing the launch among the top small-screen superhero debuts in recent years.

Promotional Stills and the Nebraska Case

Newly released promotional images for Episode 2 show veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, alongside rookie partner John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, probing a violent incident in Rushville, Nebraska. The official HBO synopsis for “Trust Fall” indicates that Jordan and Stewart are searching for physical evidence to prove that an extraterrestrial threat was involved in a local shooting. Sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald, also appears in the new stills as local law enforcement caught between the two cosmic officers and her small-town community.

The narrative is shaped by a major structural twist introduced in the premiere. While the core investigation takes place in 2016, the pilot concluded with a ten-year jump to 2026, showing John Stewart returning to Rushville to discover Hal Jordan’s frozen body stripped of his Green Lantern ring. Executive producers Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King intentionally framed the series around this flash-forward so that every decision Jordan makes during the 2016 investigation carries weight for the audience.

Cinematic Influences and Lead Chemistry

Showrunner Chris Mundy and co-creator Damon Lindelof designed Lanterns as a grounded detective thriller with western and noir tone rather than a traditional superhero project. Mundy cited the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men—which co-starred cast members Kelly Macdonald and Garret Dillahunt—as a structural reference point for building geographic isolation and mounting psychological tension.

To establish the rapport between Jordan and Stewart, the writers drew inspiration from the 1988 buddy film Midnight Run. Mundy explained that the team wanted to capture a dynamic similar to Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin’s characters, pairing two contrasting investigators on a shared journey where one effectively escorts the other, blending banter with high stakes. Lindelof added that the show incorporates classical western archetypes and explores themes of aging and generational mentorship through the central duo.

Grounded Scale and Narrative Stakes

A key focus of the adaptation is portraying Hal Jordan as a 60-year-old veteran nearing the end of his active service. Chandler noted that playing an older hero provided unique opportunities to explore wisdom, fatigue, and comedic elements rare in youth-centered superhero adaptations. Mundy emphasized that treating Green Lantern duties as an active profession naturally raises questions about when a veteran should relinquish authority—a theme Lindelof personally related to as a seasoned showrunner.

Co-creator Tom King explained that anchoring the show in rural Nebraska was an intentional choice to contrast cosmic powers against ordinary life, citing the visual scale of Lawrence of Arabia and the appearance of dragons in Game of Thrones. King based the setting of Rushville on personal stories told by his grandmother, using small-town dynamics to ground the sci-fi elements.

Global Broadcast Schedule

Episode 2 will be available on HBO Max in territories where the service operates, with regional platform partners handling distribution elsewhere, such as Crave in Canada, Sky Atlantic and Now TV in the United Kingdom, and JioHotstar in India. The episode airs Sunday evening in North America and Monday morning internationally, including 2:00 a.m. BST in the UK and 11:00 a.m. AEST in Australia. Season 1 consists of eight episodes scheduled weekly through the finale on October 4.
