Bolstering the Defense
Hull City have officially completed the signing of defender Matt Targett on a free transfer, marking a significant addition to the squad ahead of their return to the Premier League. The 30-year-old left-back joins the club on a two-year deal, which includes an option for an additional year, following the expiration of his contract with Newcastle United.
Targett arrives at the MKM Stadium with extensive top-flight experience, having made 164 Premier League appearances during his spells with Southampton, Aston Villa, and Newcastle. His arrival is seen as a strategic move by the club to bring stability and leadership to a squad preparing for the rigors of England’s elite division.
A Familiar Foe Turned Ally
Last season, Targett played a pivotal role for Middlesbrough in the Championship, where he made 45 appearances and established himself as a defensive anchor. Notably, he was part of the ‘Boro side that faced Hull City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Despite losing that match, Targett’s performance did not go unnoticed, and he now finds himself playing for the very team that denied him promotion last May.
Reflecting on the move, Targett highlighted the influence of the club’s ownership in his decision. “It was during the England game and I said Hull were interested. The next minute, I was on a phone call with the owner. He is very invested in the football club and speaks very passionately, so it didn’t take much convincing to join,” Targett noted.
The Premier League Challenge
The veteran defender is acutely aware of the challenge awaiting the Tigers. “It’s going to be a massive challenge, but we can take huge confidence from what the likes of Sunderland and Leeds did,” he said, referring to the successful top-flight returns of other former Championship sides. His role will extend beyond the pitch, as he aims to serve as a mentor for younger players who have not yet experienced the Premier League environment.
Targett’s stats from the 2025-26 season underline his consistency, having led Middlesbrough’s squad in interceptions (52) while providing four assists from the left-back position. Hull City, under the guidance of manager Kim Hellberg, will rely on this blend of defensive steel and attacking contribution when they kick off their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on August 22.
