Dominant performance at Centre Court
World No. 3 Iga Swiatek delivered a commanding performance on Thursday, defeating former world number one Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-3 to reach the third round of Wimbledon. The match, which lasted just 70 minutes, marked a significant improvement for the Polish star following her emotional and difficult three-set opening victory against Taylor Townsend.
Swiatek dominated from the outset, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set. According to match statistics, she won 26 of 35 points during the opening set, effectively neutralizing Pliskova’s serve. While the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up attempted to find rhythm in the second, Swiatek’s tactical consistency proved too much, securing her fourth career win over the Czech veteran.
Upcoming clash with Alexandra Eala
With this win, Swiatek advances to face No. 29 seed Alexandra Eala for a spot in the Wimbledon Round of 16. Eala, the first Filipina to reach a Grand Slam third round, secured her place by overcoming Maya Joint in a three-set comeback victory.
The Saturday meeting will be the third encounter between the two players on the WTA Tour, but their first on grass. The head-to-head is currently tied at 1-1, with Eala having claimed a notable victory over Swiatek at the 2025 Miami Open, followed by a hard-fought win for Swiatek in Madrid. Swiatek acknowledged the challenge posed by Eala’s style, noting, “She has a tricky game. On grass, it’s even more tricky because of the surface. It will be a good challenge for me because she doesn’t give that rhythm.”
As Swiatek pursues a deeper run at the All England Club, her performance against Pliskova signals a return to the stability she aims for on tour, contrasting sharply with the tension of her first-round appearance.
