Hauck, the former Montana head coach who was serving in his first career defensive coordinator role at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, met with Bielema early Sunday morning. According to ESPN, the two leaders mutually agreed that a leadership change was necessary to protect the well-being of the student-athletes and salvage the remainder of the season.
Statistical Breakdown and Big Ten Deficits
The defensive metrics through the first four weeks of the season painted a grim picture for a program that had higher competitive ambitions in the Big Ten. Under Hauck’s 3-3-5 defensive scheme—which he successfully deployed during his legendary FCS tenure in Missoula, as detailed by Montana Sports—Illinois struggled immensely to stop opposing offenses.
The Fighting Illini enter the critical stretch of conference play ranked 111th nationally in total defense, surrendering an average of 391 yards per contest. Conference numbers are similarly troubling: Illinois ranks last in the Big Ten in passing defense, allowing 255 yards per game through the air, while sitting near the bottom in scoring defense at 26.5 points per game.
