A data breach at local telecommunications firm Simba has compromised the personal information of 23,549 customers, according to an official notice issued by the company last Friday (25 Sept). The security incident, which was discovered by the telco on Thursday (24 Sept), exposed sensitive records including customer names, identity card (IC) numbers, dates of birth, mobile phone numbers, and email addresses.
Despite the scope of the leak, Simba maintained that no credit card or banking information was stored in the affected systems and remains secure. The company stated that there is currently no indication that any of the compromised data has been maliciously misused. Following the discovery, Simba said it swiftly resolved the breach and initiated internal reviews to reinforce its core infrastructure and security measures.
Affected subscribers are currently being notified via email, a progressive rollout that is scheduled to conclude within a week. Meanwhile, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) confirmed to The Straits Times that it is aware of the security lapse and is actively investigating the matter alongside the company.
