Apple TV+ has officially launched its highly anticipated limited series Imperfect Women, which premiered on March 18, 2026. The series, anchored by stars Kerry Washington, Elisabeth Moss, and Kate Mara, invites viewers into a complex web of guilt and long-standing female friendship, centered on the mysterious death of a character named Nancy. The eight-episode run will continue with weekly installments every Wednesday through April 29.

Adapting Imperfect Women for the California Landscape

While the series remains faithful to the core themes of Araminta Hall’s novel, show creator Annie Weisman has introduced distinct structural changes to translate the story for television. Most notably, the setting has been relocated from England to Southern California. Weisman noted that this shift allowed for a deeper exploration of the specific cultural stratifications and environments that define the lives of the three lead women. By moving the narrative to Los Angeles, the production aimed to uncover fresh story surprises that deviate from the book’s original trajectory.

Expanding Character Dynamics via Donovan

A significant creative departure in the adaptation is the introduction of a new character, Donovan, portrayed by Leslie Odom Jr. As the brother of Eleanor, played by Washington, Donovan serves as a critical narrative tool. Weisman explained that while novels offer the luxury of internal monologues, cinematic storytelling requires external relationships to ground a character’s history. Adding a family member provides a gateway for the audience to understand Eleanor’s interior life and past motivations in a way that the book did not explicitly require.

High Stakes for Love & Squalor

The project represents a milestone for the production banner Love & Squalor, founded by Elisabeth Moss and Lindsey McManus. Imperfect Women marks the first project the duo committed to after forming their company six years ago. Despite the challenges posed by Moss’s filming schedule for The Handmaid’s Tale, which concluded in early 2025, the team prioritized the development of this psychological thriller as part of their broader strategic growth. The series serves as a pivotal test for the production house as they continue to build their portfolio under their first-look deal with Disney’s 20th Television.

The strategic relocation of the story to Southern California and the inclusion of Donovan highlight a deliberate intent to evolve the source material from a private exploration of guilt into a broader, ensemble-driven mystery that leverages the specific strengths of television as a medium for character exposition.
