Quick Read

  • Jio Platforms debuted on Wednesday with a premium of over 25% above its IPO price.
  • The company's market capitalization reached 13.05 trillion rupees (7.1 billion).
  • Mukesh Ambani now controls India's two most valued companies through Reliance Industries.
  • Funds from the offering are being used to repay legacy debt and ease 5G investments.

A Stellar Market Debut and Valuation Milestone

Jio Platforms has secured its position as the second most valued firm in India following a major market debut reported by CNBC on October 29, 2026. The digital services and telecom operator, backed by Meta and Google, opened 3.3% higher on Thursday following a Wednesday market entry that delivered a premium of over 25% above its initial public offering price. This trading surge elevated the company’s market capitalization to 13.05 trillion rupees, equivalent to approximately $137.1 billion.

With this listing, billionaire Mukesh Ambani now controls India’s two most valuable companies, as his flagship enterprise Reliance Industries remains the nation’s top-valued firm. Ahead of the trading launch, the Ambani family patriarch became visibly emotional as his three children recounted the development of Jio and outlined a long-term commitment to investor value creation over the next fifty years.

Debt Reduction and Global Scale Comparisons

Market analysts note that the capital raised through the initial public offering will allow Jio Platforms to significantly reduce legacy telecommunications debt while easing its heavy 5G investment cycle. Anurag Singh, founder and managing partner of U.S.-based Ansid Capital, told CNBC that a mere 3% share dilution enabled the company to wipe out nearly 300 billion rupees of debt. Singh added that the current valuation places Jio on par with major American telecom providers such as AT&T, which holds a market capitalization of $139 billion, and Verizon Communications, valued at $179 billion according to LSEG data.

Despite the strong performance, financial experts caution that much of the company’s underlying value is already priced in following the initial listing gains. Vaqarjaved Khan, senior analyst at Indian brokerage firm Angel One, told CNBC that Jio brings a rare scale to Indian equities with a customer base exceeding half a billion users, operating margins of 52%, and a net leverage of 0.36 times. Khan noted that at a price-to-earnings multiple of 34 times, future share returns will depend on improvements in average revenue per user and expansion into artificial intelligence services.

Future Growth Areas and Industry Footprint

Looking ahead, the company plans to leverage its vast digital footprint to expand into advanced technologies. Speaking ahead of the listing, managing director Akash Ambani outlined plans to democratize technologies including artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, connected devices, and space-based connectivity over the coming decade. However, these ambitious expansion plans have already generated friction, including regulatory scrutiny over satellite communications that drew criticism from billionaire Elon Musk regarding Starlink’s market entry timeline in India.

The successful listing has also shifted the broader corporate landscape in South Asia. According to a Bloomberg report cited by CNBC, the combined market value of the Reliance Group has climbed to 30 trillion rupees, surpassing the Tata Group’s 25 trillion rupees and establishing the Ambani family enterprise as India’s leading business conglomerate.
