Carlton Blues interim coach Josh Fraser is facing unprecedented public support after leading the club to 10 wins in his 12 matches at the helm. Following a dominant 44-point victory over St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday night, supporters were heard chanting “We want Fraser,” a rare display of public endorsement that has intensified the spotlight on the club’s ongoing coaching search.
The Blues, who won only one of their first 10 matches under former coach Michael Voss, have undergone a dramatic transformation under Fraser. The team is now within reach of a wildcard berth, with a critical match against the Western Bulldogs scheduled for next week. If successful, Carlton could secure a spot in the finals series.
A culture-driven turnaround
Players have credited Fraser’s focus on culture and process for the team’s resurgence. Ruckman Marc Pittonet highlighted the contagious energy within the squad, noting that the “hard parts of the game” are now being executed repeatedly by the entire playing group. “Frase, what he says in the media is exactly how he speaks to us; it’s process-driven, it’s about the culture, it’s about the energy,” Pittonet told Fox Footy.
Midfielder Sam Walsh, who previously dodged questions regarding the coaching situation, emphasized that Fraser has kept the focus on the team’s development rather than his own personal prospects. “He’s been practicing what he’s been preaching about what we’re doing every week to get better,” Walsh said.
The decision process
While the board continues its interview process, the list of candidates remains competitive. St Kilda assistant Corey Enright, Fremantle’s Jaymie Graham, Geelong’s James Kelly, and Hawthorn’s Daniel Giansiracusa are all reportedly in the mix. However, industry experts, including Lions great Jonathan Brown, have suggested that overlooking Fraser’s record would be a significant oversight.
Fraser is expected to decide within the coming days whether he will formally enter the application process. Given his current win-loss record and the visible buy-in from both the playing group and the fanbase, he is widely viewed as the favorite should he decide to pursue the role permanently.
