Japanese football icon Keisuke Honda made his presence felt during FC Jurong’s opening match of the 2026-27 Singapore Premier League (SPL) season on Sept 13, though not in the manner fans expected. Despite being widely anticipated to make his playing debut at Jalan Besar Stadium, the 40-year-old veteran took on a prominent coaching role during the team’s 4-0 victory over the Young Lions, according to The Straits Times.
While head coach Jaswinder Singh remains the official lead, Honda was seen actively directing play during hydration breaks and throughout the match. Listed on the official team sheet as staff rather than a player, Honda’s involvement was characterized by tactical briefings and vocal instruction from the touchline. Singh confirmed post-match that Honda is still building match fitness following his late arrival to the pre-season squad.
Dominant Performance Amid Tactical Adjustments
FC Jurong’s victory was built on clinical finishing and a solid defensive display. Toa Suenaga opened the scoring in the 14th minute after capitalizing on a spill by Young Lions goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud. Suenaga added his second just before halftime. Second-half goals from Andrew Aw Yong and Shunsuke Ono sealed the 4-0 scoreline, while 42-year-old goalkeeper Hassan Sunny maintained a clean sheet with several key saves.
Young Lions coach Firdaus Kassim expressed frustration with the result, noting that his team created six or seven significant scoring opportunities but failed to convert, ultimately paying the price for defensive mistakes. The Young Lions, who have bolstered their roster with experienced signings such as Shuya Yamashita and Hafiz Nor, struggled with decision-making and maturity, an area where they will need immediate improvement to progress beyond last season’s seventh-place finish.

The transition of FC Jurong—formerly known as Albirex Niigata Singapore—into a new era under Honda’s influence remains a focal point for the season. While Singh emphasized that the priority is getting Honda “ramped up” physically, his immediate impact as a mentor to the squad is already visible. FC Jurong is scheduled to face Hougang United on Sept 18 at the Jurong East Stadium, where questions regarding Honda’s potential playing debut will continue to persist as the coaching staff monitors his progress.
