A New Adaptation Hits Streaming
Prime Video officially launched its highly anticipated adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 bestselling romance novel, The Love Hypothesis, on September 23, 2026. The film stars Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen and Lili Reinhart as PhD candidate Olive Smith, bringing the popular “fake dating” trope to the screen with several notable narrative shifts from the source material.
The story centers on a pragmatic academic arrangement between Olive and Adam—a Stanford University professor—who decide to pretend they are a couple to navigate personal and professional pressures. According to E! Online, the film preserves the core “fake dating” framework that made the book a sensation on BookTok, though it makes distinct changes to character arcs and key plot points to suit the cinematic format.
Narrative Shifts from the Novel
Adapting a novel known for its specific fan-fiction roots required several structural changes. Most significantly, the character Dr. Holden Rodriguez is entirely absent from the film. This omission alters the subplot involving Olive’s roommate, Malcolm, and removes the early warning signs regarding the antagonist, Dr. Tom Benton (played by Arty Froushan).
The film also modifies the history between Olive and her previous crush, Jeremy. While they are established as exes in the book, the movie presents them as never having dated, framing Jeremy instead as a long-term unrequited interest. Additionally, the film introduces a new cocktail party scene that serves as a focal point for the tension between Olive and Dr. Benton, providing a different environment for the pair to interact compared to the book’s faculty picnic.
Changes to the Climax and Resolution
One of the most significant departures involves the third act. In the book, Olive uses an audio recording of Dr. Benton’s harassment as a pivotal plot device to confront him. The film replaces this with a direct threat from Benton and a confrontation facilitated by Anh in a lab bathroom, leading to a dramatic classroom showdown between Adam and his former friend.
Furthermore, the timeline of the leads’ “meet-cute” confession is accelerated. While the book delays the revelation that Adam was the mystery man from the initial lab bathroom encounter until the final declaration of love, the film addresses this connection much earlier, following the cocktail party scene, allowing for a shift in their dynamic as they form a “new hypothesis” for their relationship.
