A Milestone for Malaysian Retail
Malaysian entrepreneurs Esther Tai Shen Hui and her sister Amy Tai Shuh Yuk have been inducted into the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia Class of 2026. The co-founders of the footwear brand Machino were recognized in the retail and e-commerce category for their ability to blend traditional cultural elements with modern comfort-focused design.
Solving the Comfort Paradox
Founded in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, Machino was built on a mission to eliminate the discomfort typically associated with stylish footwear. By integrating thick insole sponges and handcrafted techniques, the sisters have created a niche in a highly competitive market. According to Esther Tai, who serves as CEO, the brand’s name itself is a tribute to Malaysia’s multicultural identity: MA for Malay, CH for Chinese, IN for Indian, and O for others.
Strategic Growth and Digital Integration
The company maintains a lean, direct-to-consumer model, leveraging TikTok Shop and its own e-commerce platform alongside select physical retail outlets in Putrajaya and Selangor. The founders have integrated artificial intelligence into their daily operations to optimize trend forecasting and training, allowing the team to focus on higher-value creative work.
As the brand eyes international expansion, with Singapore identified as its first overseas market, the Forbes recognition serves as a validation of their business model. This growth comes amid a broader regional trend of increased economic cooperation; notably, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines have recently deepened their own strategic partnership through joint fare products, signaling a strengthening of the cross-border business environment between the two nations.
