Manchester United’s pursuit of a third midfield signing this summer has centered on Roma’s Manu Kone. Following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the club’s hierarchy, overseen by INEOS, remains active in the market to bolster Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of their upcoming Champions League campaign.
While the interest in Kone is verified, the club’s approach remains in a preliminary phase. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United have held concrete conversations with the player’s agents, but have not yet initiated formal, club-to-club negotiations with Roma. This caution stems from an internal lack of consensus regarding the investment required to secure the French midfielder.
The Financial Hurdles
Roma has set a reported asking price of £51 million (€60m) for Kone. Reports from Italy suggest this figure has created friction within the Old Trafford leadership, as the investment does not currently enjoy unanimous backing. Consequently, the deal is currently in a state of ‘consideration’ rather than active pursuit.
In an effort to bridge the financial gap, reports indicate that United have explored the possibility of including Marcus Rashford in a swap deal. This strategy aims to lower the cash expenditure for Kone, following the collapse of Rashford’s proposed permanent move to Barcelona. However, sources note that Rashford’s high salary remains a significant hurdle to any such agreement, potentially complicating negotiations significantly.
The Wider Midfield Shortlist
Kone is not the only option under consideration. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains on the club’s radar, with reports suggesting the player is keen on a move to Manchester. Additionally, Botafogo’s Danilo has been offered to the club, though Romano clarifies that this remains a reactive interest rather than a proactive negotiation. The club’s decision-making process is currently focused on identifying the specific profile required to complete their midfield rebuild, with the fitness concerns that scuppered a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson serving as a cautionary tale for the hierarchy.
