A Resilient Niche in an Automated Market
While the automotive industry continues its relentless shift toward automatic transmissions and CVTs, the manual transmission segment remains a surprisingly resilient pocket of the 2026 market. According to recent industry reporting, there are approximately 25 new vehicles available in the US today that still offer three pedals, ranging from rugged off-roaders to high-performance super sedans.
Contrary to expectations of a total phase-out, some manufacturers have reported slight increases in manual transmission sales compared to 2025. Brands including BMW, Cadillac, Mazda, and Porsche have noted that demand from driving enthusiasts continues to support the production of these traditional gearboxes, even as other manufacturers trim their offerings.
The Last Call for Certain Models
Despite this pockets of enthusiast demand, the window of opportunity is narrowing. Several notable models are approaching the end of their lifecycle. The Toyota GR Supra, praised for its tight and direct manual implementation, is slated for discontinuation within the next year, with the current “Final Edition” models marking the end of the line. Similarly, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI is expected to exit the market in 2027, making 2026 one of the final years for buyers to acquire a new manual-equipped sedan from the brand.
Performance and Practicality
The 2026 roster features a diverse array of vehicle types. Sports car enthusiasts retain access to the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 twins, which remain benchmarks for affordable, lightweight performance. At the higher end, the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing stands out with its 662-horsepower supercharged V8 and a Tremec six-speed gearbox, offering a level of engagement rarely seen in modern luxury sedans. For off-roaders, the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler continue to cater to those who prefer manual control over rocky terrain, with the Bronco’s seven-speed unit featuring a dedicated crawler gear.
While some manufacturers, like BMW, continue to offer manuals across their M-series lineup, they often accompany these with lower torque output compared to their automatic counterparts due to the physical limitations of the gearboxes. Nevertheless, for many buyers, the tactile experience of a mechanical shifter outweighs the objective performance gains of modern automatic systems.
