Global financial markets are on high alert this week as a flurry of high-stakes diplomacy and intensified military action creates uncertainty for investors. U.S. President Donald Trump held separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend, according to reports from both the Kremlin and the Ukrainian government.

The diplomatic outreach coincides with a sharp escalation in violence. On Monday, Russian forces launched a major missile and drone barrage on Kyiv, resulting in at least 11 deaths and significant damage to residential infrastructure. Simultaneously, Ukraine has accelerated its campaign against Russian energy assets, reporting successful strikes on an oil terminal in St. Petersburg, the Kronstadt Naval Base, and refineries in the Yaroslavl and Leningrad regions.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described the 90-minute call between Trump and Putin as “constructive,” noting that Trump expressed an interest in ending the conflict swiftly. President Zelenskyy confirmed his discussion with the U.S. leader, stating they agreed to continue talks at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, which begins Tuesday.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggest the Kremlin is utilizing these diplomatic channels to push narratives of Russian battlefield momentum to influence Western perception ahead of the NATO conference. As markets weigh geopolitical risk and energy security, the focus remains on whether these discussions can bridge the gap between the battlefield realities and the potential for a negotiated settlement.
