A New Frontier for Personal AI
At the annual Meta Connect 2026 event in Menlo Park, California, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang introduced a significant expansion of the company’s artificial intelligence strategy. Central to the announcement is Muse, a new AI assistant designed to handle complex, everyday tasks ranging from email management and form completion to booking travel and online shopping, according to Mashable.
Zuckerberg framed Muse as a foundational step toward his long-term vision of “personal superintelligence.” The tool currently operates on a freemium model and is being rolled out in select regions, including Canada. To address growing privacy concerns regarding AI agents, Meta introduced the “Muse Secure VM,” a cloud-based environment that isolates user data from the host device. The company emphasized that Muse requires explicit user approval before executing sensitive actions, such as finalizing a purchase or sending correspondence.
Hardware Expansion: VR and Smart Glasses
The hardware announcements at Connect 2026 underscored Meta’s ambition to move beyond handheld screens. The standout device is the company’s new Meta VR Glasses, priced at $1,300. Weighing approximately 100 grams, these devices utilize a tethered puck for processing and battery, featuring 5K resolution and full-color passthrough. According to Engadget, the glasses are designed for both gaming—with support for 75 titles at launch—and professional productivity, allowing users to tether the device to a PC or Mac.
Meta also addressed the “camera-shy” market by introducing Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses. These audio-only wearables, starting at $349, are designed for all-day comfort and feature 12 hours of battery life. For those seeking camera integration, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 smart glasses received a design refresh, including new frames like the Aviator and Zena, along with a button dedicated to triggering Meta AI. These third-gen specs are priced starting at $449 and boast improved battery life and microphone noise cancellation.
Market Strategy and Retail Integration
Meta is aggressively positioning Muse to facilitate commerce. Zuckerberg confirmed partnerships with Stripe and Shopify’s Shop Pay to enable direct purchasing through the assistant. However, the ecosystem faces hurdles; notably, Amazon has already blocked Muse from shopping on its platform. Meta is exploring a potential fee structure for transactions completed through the agent, signaling a move to monetize the assistant’s utility beyond its current free tier.
The company also announced feature updates for the Meta Ray-Ban Display, including improved heads-up navigation for cyclists and public transit users, and a new “hearing enhancement” feature designed to help users navigate noisy environments. These updates will be rolled out in the US and select European markets later this year.
