International Expansion for Na Hong-jin’s ‘Hope’
Neon has officially confirmed the upcoming UK release of the South Korean sci-fi action thriller Hope, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Na Hong-jin. The film, which features a high-profile international cast including Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, has already garnered significant attention following its domestic release in South Korea last month. Following the UK rollout, the film is scheduled for a North American debut on September 9.
The project marks a notable collaboration between Fassbender and Vikander, set against the backdrop of a genre-bending narrative. The story follows police chief Bum-seok, played by Hwang Jung-min, and officer Sung-ae, portrayed by Jung Ho-yeon, as they investigate a mysterious extraterrestrial presence in the remote village of Hope Harbor. The ensemble cast also includes Zo In-sung, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
Behind the Scenes of a Cosmic Tragedy
During a recent audience talk (GV) at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul, director Na Hong-jin and his production team offered rare insights into the film’s meticulous construction. Na, who scouted locations across Romania to capture the film’s isolated atmosphere, emphasized that the project was designed to evoke a sense of cosmic dread through authentic, physical sets rather than relying solely on digital effects.
Production designer Lee Hwoo-kyung noted that the film’s destroyed village environment was crafted with extreme precision. “Though it looks chaotic, every broken element follows the alien’s movements,” Lee explained, adding that the team spent months researching textures and color palettes to unify the film’s 1980s-90s aesthetic with a distinct Western-film feel. Cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, a frequent collaborator of Na, utilized vintage ARRI cameras to achieve a visceral, intuitive visual style, opting for wide-angle pans that required the crew to navigate around the lens to avoid appearing on camera.
Crafting the Alien Narrative
The film’s narrative depth extends to its smallest details, including the creation of a unique alien alphabet used in on-screen props like the Hopro Real Estate map. Director Na also addressed fan theories regarding the film’s cryptic dialogue. He confirmed that a specific line delivered by Fassbender’s character, the alien warrior Mabeyo, to the protagonist Sung-gi, was intentionally left without subtitles to maintain the ambiguity of the interaction.
Na also addressed the film’s deliberate lack of children in the village of Hope Harbor, clarifying that the setting was conceived specifically as an isolated environment inhabited only by elders, heightening the sense of vulnerability and impending disaster as the mystery unfolds.
