In a candid interview with British Vogue, Academy Award-winning actor Nicole Kidman has opened up about the emotional toll of her recent divorce from country musician Keith Urban. Kidman, 59, described the period following their separation as a time characterized by deep vulnerability and fear, marking a significant transition in her personal life.
Kidman and Urban, who married in 2006 in Sydney, Australia, finalized their divorce in January 2026 after Kidman filed for dissolution in September 2025, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple shares two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. Reflecting on the dissolution of a marriage that spanned nearly two decades, Kidman admitted, “I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now. You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s… not.”
The “Feelings First” Approach
Addressing her post-divorce mindset, Kidman rejected the notion of being a calculated or overly analytical person. Instead, she described herself as “feeling-centred,” noting that she prefers to lead with her heart rather than her head. “It throws people, because I think they think I’ll be far more measured and I’m not,” she told Vogue. She emphasized that while she values a well-examined life, her priority is staying open to possibilities despite the uncertainty of her current situation.
When asked about the fear associated with such a public transition, Kidman noted, “There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing. And then at the same time I’m going: ‘Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.’”
Reflections on Past Scrutiny
The interview also touched upon her formative years in the public eye, specifically her high-profile marriage to Tom Cruise, which began in 1990 and ended in 2001. When asked if her experience with the Cruise divorce helped her weather the scrutiny surrounding her split from Urban, Kidman was dismissive of the idea that experience makes the process easier. “It’s all new. Every time!” she stated.
Kidman recalled the early days of her marriage to Cruise, noting that she was just 23 when she entered a union that many critics warned would overshadow her burgeoning career. “I remember people saying to me, ‘OK, well this is really going to affect your career’. I’m like, ‘I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.’” She added that she was willing to sacrifice professional advancement for the relationship, stating, “Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.”
