Microsoft has officially launched its new M365 E7 premium subscription tier, marking a significant strategic pivot toward autonomous, agentic AI. The move, announced Wednesday, bundles Microsoft 365 E5, the Copilot AI assistant, and the newly unveiled Agent 365 platform into a single $99 monthly per-user subscription.
The Shift to Agentic AI in Microsoft 365
The introduction of the E7 plan signals what Microsoft describes as the ‘third wave’ of AI integration. Unlike previous iterations focused on simple generative tasks, this phase emphasizes agentic AI capable of executing complex, multi-step workflows. According to Charles Lamanna, President of Business Apps and Agents at Microsoft, these tools are designed to function like human workers, coordinating actions across multiple applications and files to manage tasks such as calendar maintenance and data analysis.
As part of this evolution, Microsoft is rolling out Agent 365, which will be generally available on May 1 at a standalone price of $15 per month. The platform provides enterprises with governance, security, and observability tools for managing the millions of AI agents already appearing within the ecosystem.
Multi-Model Flexibility and Anthropic Integration
In a departure from its exclusive reliance on OpenAI, Microsoft confirmed that its Copilot suite will now utilize a multi-model approach. The company has integrated Anthropic’s Claude models into the M365 Copilot environment. This ‘auto-router’ system dynamically selects the most appropriate model based on the specific task, whether it involves drafting documents or refining spreadsheets.
Lamanna noted that this flexibility allows Microsoft to leverage different strengths from various AI providers. The company reports that daily active users for M365 Copilot have increased ten-fold over the past year, with 90% of Fortune 500 companies currently utilizing the tools. This rapid adoption has necessitated a more sophisticated management framework, which the E7 tier aims to consolidate.
Future of Productivity and Enterprise Adoption
The integration of these agents extends directly into core productivity software, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Users can now task these agents with updating formulas, creating pivot tables, or modifying document structures in real-time. By providing a unified billing structure through the E7 plan, Microsoft expects to streamline how enterprises deploy and scale these autonomous capabilities across their operations.
