Fremantle Dockers midfielder Murphy Reid has cemented his status as one of the AFL’s brightest young talents, claiming his first Glendinning-Allan Medal following a dominant display in Friday night’s 70-point Western Derby victory over the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. At just 19 years old, Reid became the youngest Fremantle player to ever receive the award, which honors the best afield in the cross-town rivalry.
Reid’s impact was most profound during a pivotal third-quarter surge that broke the game open. He finished the match with 26 disposals, six inside 50s, and eight score involvements, including a spectacular 50-meter goal on the run. His ability to manipulate the opposition and execute under pressure was described by Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir as possessing “unteachable” natural football ability.
Tactical Dominance and Stakes
The victory was a comprehensive team effort, with Jye Amiss kicking five goals and the Dockers recording their fifth consecutive derby win. The result keeps Fremantle (17-2) firmly at the top of the AFL ladder, maintaining a three-win buffer with only four rounds remaining in the regular season. This puts the club in a prime position to secure its second-ever minor premiership.
While the Dockers celebrated, the match was marred by a serious injury to West Coast mid-season recruit Oliver Francou, who was stretchered off in the fourth quarter after suffering a severe leg laceration during a tackle. The incident halted play for several minutes as medical staff administered pain relief.

Coach Longmuir acknowledged that Reid’s rapid ascent will inevitably draw more attention from opposing tactical teams. “Teams will start looking at different things, I guess,” Longmuir noted, emphasizing that the club does not rely solely on Reid’s individual output. The coaching staff is focusing on ensuring Reid maintains his flexibility and continues to leverage the support of the senior core surrounding him, which has been instrumental in his development this season.
