Neil Henderson, the original lead guitarist and songwriter for the Scottish pop band Bay City Rollers, has died at the age of 73. His passing was confirmed on September 24 by his former bandmates in Middle of the Road, who remembered him as a talented musician and a dear friend.
A Career Defined by Music
Henderson’s musical journey was marked by his early contribution to the Bay City Rollers. He performed with the group between 1970 and 1972, playing on their 1971 breakthrough chart hit, “Keep On Dancing.” According to the BBC, Henderson eventually parted ways with the band prior to their massive international success in the mid-1970s. His daughter, Shona, noted that he left the group due to creative disagreements regarding their musical direction.
Following his tenure with the Rollers, Henderson joined the band Middle of the Road, known for their chart-topping success with “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.” In a statement shared on Facebook, Middle of the Road paid tribute to his legacy, stating, “His memory will live on with all who had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him as will his music.”
A Lasting Legacy
Henderson had been battling health issues for several years, following a stroke that left him in a difficult recovery process. Despite these challenges, his family emphasized that his passion for music remained a constant force in his life; he continued to work in a home studio near his residence in Scotland long after his touring days concluded.
He is survived by his two daughters, Heather and Shona, who have received an outpouring of condolences from the music community and fans of the 1970s pop era.
