Quick Read

  • Netflix reported Q3 earnings per share of 87 cents, topping the 82-cent consensus estimate.
  • Third-quarter revenue reached .87 billion, matching Wall Street expectations and rising 12% year-over-year.
  • The streaming company forecast Q4 revenue of .44 billion, falling short of analyst projections of .51 billion.
  • Netflix lowered its 2026 ad revenue target to .7 billion from billion and announced a 6% workforce reduction.

Netflix shares declined in extended trading after the streaming giant reported its third-quarter financial results. While the company exceeded Wall Street profit estimates and matched revenue expectations, a softer-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue forecast and a downward revision to its annual ad targets unsettled investors.

During the regular trading session, Investor’s Business Daily reported that Netflix closed down 1.66% at $68.69. Following the earnings release, the stock dropped roughly 6% in extended trading to about $64.69. The pullback deepens a wider slide for the stock, which is down about 25% for the year and roughly 48% below its June 2025 record high.

Third-Quarter Financial Performance

For the quarter ending in September, Netflix reported earnings per share of 87 cents, topping the 82 cents anticipated by analysts polled by FactSet. Revenue reached $12.87 billion, matching consensus estimates and representing a roughly 12% increase compared to the same period a year earlier. Net income rose to $3.66 billion from $2.55 billion year-over-year, with management noting that the timing of certain expenses contributed to the bottom-line jump.

Revenue growth rose nearly 12% year-over-year, driven by membership growth and price increases implemented in March. Popular third-quarter releases included titles such as “The Gentlemen,” “The Last House,” and “Elite Force.” However, Business Insider noted that revenue growth slowed for a third consecutive quarter, signaling a deceleration that has drawn scrutiny from market analysts.

Fourth-Quarter Guidance and Advertising Revisions

Investor caution centered primarily on forward-looking guidance. Netflix projected fourth-quarter revenue of $13.44 billion, falling short of the $13.51 billion consensus estimate tracked by Wall Street. The company also forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 67 cents a share, compared to analyst projections of 73 cents.

In addition, Netflix lowered its full-year 2026 ad revenue forecast to approximately $2.7 billion from an earlier target of $3 billion. Co-CEO Greg Peters attributed the adjustment to a slower-than-expected rollout of certain advertising product capabilities, acknowledging during an earnings call that the platform is slightly behind its aggressive annual targets.

Executive Shakeup and Workforce Reductions

CoinCentral reported that the financial update follows a tumultuous period of internal restructuring. Last week, Netflix announced a 6% staff reduction, impacting roughly 1,000 employees in its largest workforce cut since 2022. The company expects the layoffs to impact its fourth-quarter operating margin by about 120 basis points.

The restructuring also touched top leadership. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria departed her role and was replaced by former Disney executive Peter Rice. Additionally, film division head Dan Lin exited as the streaming leader undertakes a creative overhaul to address a perceived lack of breakout hits.

Market observers noted that the combination of slowing engagement growth, decelerating revenue expansion, and leadership transitions has increased pressure on management to execute its strategic roadmap. Forrester analyst Mike Proulx described the slowing growth pace as a wake-up call for a company that once defined the streaming market.
