OpenAI has officially launched a dedicated desktop application preview for Linux, fulfilling a long-standing request from the open-source developer community and expanding its AI software footprint across all major desktop operating systems. The worldwide rollout, announced on August 11, 2026, brings ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the company’s Codex code-generation tools directly to desktop environments widely favored by software engineers, system administrators, and technology researchers.
Prior to this release, Linux users were required to access OpenAI’s services primarily through browser interfaces or community-developed wrapper applications, while dedicated native apps had already been deployed for Windows and macOS. The new native preview gives Linux users direct access to conversational models, workspace features, and technical assistance within their desktop environments.
The initial preview release targets several foundational Linux distributions that form the backbone of the broader open-source desktop ecosystem. OpenAI confirmed that officially supported distributions include desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Although the Linux ecosystem comprises hundreds of active distributions, OpenAI’s focus on these core upstream systems ensures compatibility across popular downstream operating systems—such as Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, and Fedora spins—that share the same base packages and execution libraries.
“Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system,” OpenAI stated in its launch announcement on Tuesday.
The release also highlights growing competitive pressure among leading AI labs to capture the developer tool market. OpenAI’s deployment follows a similar move by rival Anthropic, which released a dedicated Linux desktop app for its Claude AI assistant approximately one month prior, targeting Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12 or later versions. By bringing ChatGPT Work and Codex to Linux alongside standard consumer subscriptions, OpenAI aims to maintain its footing among open-source developers and enterprise technical teams who rely on multi-platform workflows. The preview version is now available globally across supported distributions as OpenAI gathers platform feedback ahead of a broader release.
