BEND, Ore. (Azat TV) – Newly reviewed court records and law enforcement documents shed light on a deeply troubled domestic background surrounding Griffin John II, the 16-year-old who opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing four people before being fatally shot by an armed parent. According to an investigative report published by NBC News, files involving the shooter’s parents reveal a chaotic family environment marked by violent encounters, law enforcement interventions, and severe financial instability.

The tragedy unfolded when police say the 16-year-old used a shotgun belonging to his mother to blast through a door at Silver Rail Elementary School. He targeted a special education classroom, killing three children—identified as 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, an 8-year-old, and an 11-year-old—along with 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. Two others were wounded in the attack, including a 7-year-old child in a wheelchair and a 54-year-old teacher, before a responding armed parent intervened and killed the gunman.

Domestic Violence Roots and Parental Background

Details emerging from legal archives trace the family’s turbulent history back to events occurring even before the shooter’s birth. Court documents obtained by the New York Post indicate that the elder Griffin John had a documented history of alcohol abuse and violent behavior. Records show he was sentenced to 48 months in prison following an attack on the shooter’s mother, Shauntai Nickerson, while she was pregnant. During court proceedings, the father petitioned a judge to lift a restraining order so he could watch his son grow up in Newport, Oregon.

Following his early release from prison, the elder John remained out of custody for only a brief period. Court records show he was arrested again in 2012 for allegedly head-butting a police officer, alongside parole violations involving alcohol and drug use. Shortly after the father’s initial legal troubles, Nickerson relocated her son three hours west to Bend, Oregon, attempting to distance the family from the earlier domestic turbulence.

Investigation Into Extremist Ties and Mother’s Remarks

In the wake of the elementary school massacre, investigators have begun examining whether the teenager had connections to violent extremist groups, while also probing how he gained access to his mother’s shotgun. Family members in eastern Oregon have largely declined to speak with journalists, with some threatening reporters who sought interviews.

Shauntai Nickerson offered a brief public statement the day after the shooting, expressing grief over the tragedy. “I’m sorry… I miss him,” she told reporters, while maintaining that her son was generally regarded as a good boy. When asked about the firearm used in the attack, she declined to explain how the teenager obtained the weapon, adding that she would have prevented the tragedy if it had been within her power.
