A Return to the Land of the Dead

Pixar Animation Studios has officially confirmed that a sequel to its Academy Award-winning film Coco is in production, with a theatrical release set for November 2029. The announcement, made during the studio’s D23 fan event, reveals that the narrative will jump forward in time, featuring a teenage version of the original protagonist, Miguel.

The sequel brings back a key creative force from the 2017 original: director Lee Unkrich, who had previously retired from the studio in 2019. Unkrich will co-direct the project alongside Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen, a veteran producer known for his work on Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, has been tapped to produce the film, signaling Pixar’s intent to maintain the high production standards of its recent billion-dollar hits.

Plot and Casting Developments

Benjamin Bratt, who voiced the legendary singer Ernesto de la Cruz in the first film, confirmed his return to the role during the D23 presentation. While details of the plot remain largely under wraps, Bratt teased a central conflict involving his character’s legacy. “To some, he’s a little menace who ruined a career and destroyed a legacy,” Bratt said, noting that Ernesto de la Cruz is returning to seek revenge, which will force Miguel back into the Land of the Dead.

The transition from a young boy to a teenager marks a significant shift in the franchise’s tone. Concept art shared by the studio depicts Miguel alongside his dog, Dante, suggesting that the core emotional bonds of the first film remain central to the narrative, even as the stakes escalate.

Strategic Context for Pixar

The decision to revisit the world of Coco follows a trend of Pixar leaning into established intellectual property. With recent successes like Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 5, the studio has demonstrated a robust ability to capitalize on legacy franchises. The original Coco remains a critical and commercial milestone for the studio, having grossed over $800 million globally and winning Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, “Remember Me.”

Beyond the film, Disney is continuing to expand the brand’s footprint, with plans for a Coco-themed attraction at Disney California Adventure. As the studio balances its new original projects—such as the upcoming Ghost Market slated for 2028—the 2029 release of Coco 2 serves as a key pillar in their long-term theatrical strategy.
