Quick Read

  • Raphinha has been cleared for the match against Norway after a hamstring injury.
  • Manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed the winger will be available off the bench.
  • The player has returned to full training but is not yet at 100% fitness.
  • Brazil aims to manage his minutes carefully to avoid recurring injury.

Strategic Return for Seleção

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that winger Raphinha is available for selection in today’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Norway. The 29-year-old, who has been sidelined since June 19, marks a significant boost for the Brazilian attack, though the coaching staff remains cautious regarding his match fitness.

Raphinha suffered a hamstring injury during the group-stage encounter against Haiti, forcing him to miss the subsequent matches against Scotland and Japan. Despite initial concerns that the Barcelona forward might miss the remainder of the tournament, his recovery has progressed rapidly. He rejoined full training on Friday, July 3, and completed a final session on Saturday without reported discomfort.

Managing Minutes and Expectations

Speaking ahead of the knockout match at MetLife Stadium, Ancelotti noted that while the player is available, he is not yet at 100% capacity. “Raphinha has recovered very well and very quickly,” the manager stated. “He is not quite at 100%, but he is available if needed.” The current plan is to utilize the winger off the bench to manage his physical load and avoid aggravating the recurring hamstring issues that have hampered his season.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarães echoed the sentiment of the squad, confirming that the winger has been training with high intensity. “He’s ready and has been training… Let’s see what the manager decides,” Guimarães told reporters.

Path to the Quarterfinals

Raphinha’s availability provides Ancelotti with additional tactical flexibility. Prior to the tournament, the manager described the winger as one of the world’s best at providing “attacking depth” and creating space behind defensive lines. Brazil has successfully navigated the group stage and the Round of 32 in his absence, relying on the form of Vinícius Júnior and others. If Brazil overcomes Norway, the team will advance to face either England or Mexico in the quarterfinals on July 11, where Raphinha is expected to be in contention for a starting role.
