A Chilling Reflection of Reality
As extreme weather events become increasingly frequent, the BBC’s new psychological thriller The Rapture arrives with a premise that feels uncomfortably plausible. Adapted from Liz Jensen’s 2009 novel and filmed in Wales, the five-part series explores a Britain suffocating under an oppressive heatwave. The narrative weaves together climate anxiety, the fragility of mental health, and the thin line between prophetic vision and psychological delusion.
The story follows Dr. Gabriele ‘Gabs’ Fox, a forensic psychologist working in a secure psychiatric hospital, who encounters a patient named Bethany Krall. Convicted of murdering her mother, 17-year-old Bethany claims to have psychic abilities, illustrating her visions of impending global disasters through complex drawings. As the series progresses, the central tension rests on a single question posed by executive producer Rebecca Durbin: ‘Has Gabs been taken in by a manipulative psychopath, or is Bethany a teenage prophet?’

Ruth Madeley stars as the lead, Gabs, a forensic psychologist attempting to rebuild her life after a car accident claimed her husband’s life and left her paralyzed. India Amarteifio as Bethany Krall

The Rapture premieres on Sunday, July 26, at 21:00 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. While the full series will be available for streaming as a box set on launch, BBC One will broadcast the five episodes over three consecutive nights, concluding on Tuesday, July 28.
